Abstract:
Criticizes the novel for its schematic characterizations, especially that of the Jewish literary critic André Erl-König, modelled on the critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki against whom Walser has an obsessive resentment. Erl-König is an artificial amalgam of all the familiar stereotypes of the Jew. His characterization lacks depth or complexity and he undergoes no development. The other characters hate him and justify his supposed murder. Suggests that criticizing the novel for its poor literary quality may defer over-hasty judgment on its antisemitism.
