Abstract: Discusses the stances of Argentinean and international Jewish institutions in relation to situations of danger suffered by the Argentinean Jews - first in 1974-75, under the third Peronist government, and later during 1989-99, under the government of Carlos S. Menem. In 1974-75, in the context of increasing hostility and threats against the Jews, and under a government which viewed with indulgence the criminal activities of fascist para-police gangs, the Jewish community chose to keep a low profile and not to confront the heads of state. International Jewish organizations, such as the Jewish World Congress, and the Israeli Embassy in Argentina followed the policies of the Jewish establishment. During Menem's presidency (1989-99), after the bombing of the Israeli Embassy and of the AMIA building, the Jewish community opted for struggle, at the legal and political level, to achieve clarification on the perpetration of those crimes. At the same time, the Argentinean community called for international Jewish organizations and Israel to exercise pressure on the Menem government to obtain these goals. Concludes that a common trait of both of the historical periods was the helplessness of the Argentinean Jewish community, and the need of support and assistance from Jewish international organizations.
