Abstract:
From November 1938, non-Aryan musicians - among them soloists, conductors, composers, and professors of music departments in universities - were excluded from German musical life, as well as that of German-occupied countries. In Germany, they were allowed to practice their professions only in the framework of the Jüdischer Kulturbund, which was controlled by the Nazis and also served the purposes of Nazi propaganda. Many of the composers emigrated. The remaining Jewish population eventually could no longer pay the expenses for performances of the Kulturbund; these were limited gradually, until the final prohibition in September 1941. Some well-known composers were deported to Theresienstadt - among them Viktor Ullmann, Hans Krása, Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Sigmund Schul - where they participated in the organization of musical activities. Discusses the works of these composers, and relates their fate.
