Abstract:
Discusses the realities of Jewish religious observance in France during the Second World War. Asserts that there was no legal interdiction, but in practice observance was limited. Rabbis were evacuated from Paris by the Consistoire immediately after the Nazi occupation of the city. Attacks on synagogues led to their desecration and sometimes destruction, especially in provincial towns. In the south of France, attacks increased from 1942. Surveys the most important acts of vandalism and spoliation. Jewish libraries and archives were confiscated. Mentions efforts of the Consistoire to obtain protection for Jewish properties, but it did not succeed.
