Abstract:
In his work, written in 1781, Dohm favored improvement in the civil status of the Jews but demanded, as a precondition, the abandonment of Jewish ceremonial law. In spite of his friendship with Mendelssohn, the deist Dohm shared the common negative stereotype of the Jew, especially his image as usurer, with many other representatives of the Enlightenment. However, he saw the causes of these negative characteristics not only in the Talmud and rabbinic Judaism, but also in the discriminatory policies of the Christian state. Mendelssohn, in his reply to Dohm, welcomed the proposal of civic improvement of the Jews, but rejected the demand to abandon the Jewish law.
