Abstract:
Mahler was the most conspicuous Jewish composer mentioned in Austro-German antisemitic literature (more than Mendelssohn or Schoenberg), both in his lifetime and after his death. Not only his critics, but also his admirers, agreed that some qualities of his music could be explained by his Jewish heritage. Discusses changes in the nature and role of antisemitic discourse in the criticism of Mahler's works between 1900-45. From the use of antisemitic arguments as part of a critique of assimilation or of artistic modernism, it became in the Nazi period "pure antisemitism" - an outright rejection of the composer because of his Jewish origins. Musicologists excised Mahler from their histories of German music. The few who did mention him did not consider the "Jewish" qualities of his music.
