Abstract:
This article analyzes Rutu Modan's graphic novel The Property in light of the widening gap between Jews, Israelis, and Poles over how to best understand, remember, and commemorate the Holocaust. Rejecting simplistic notions that present Poles as solely perpetrators or victims, Modan offers a model for reconciliation that recognizes the importance of heritage, legacy, and postmemory while arguing that these groups can share together in the tragedy of the Holocaust without negating the experience of the other.
