Abstract:
Discusses German nationalist Jewish organizations which existed in pre-World War II Germany. The Verband Nationaldeutscher Juden was established in 1921 by Dr. Max Neumann, who opposed all Jewish tradition and believed that Jews should totally assimilate. He supported the Nazi party, in spite of its racism, and was in favor of expelling Jewish immigrants. The Deutscher Vortrupp, Gefolgschaft Deutscher Juden was established by a group of young Jewish intellectuals in 1933, under the leadership of Hans-Joachim Schoeps, who was not in favor of assimilation but supported the Nazi regime. The nationalist youth movement Schwarzes Fähnlein Jungenschaft, which was set up in May 1932, became illegal already in 1934, while the first two organizations were allowed to function until 1935. In that year Neumann was arrested, released, and allowed to emigrate to the U.S., where he died in 1939. Schoeps fled to Sweden in 1938, but returned to Germany in 1946 and attempted to renew his nationalist activities, even though his parents had perished in the Holocaust.
