Abstract:
Martin Buber’s concern with true leadership is evident in his biblical studies, analysis of Jewish history, and his political stance. One aspect of that concern focused on what he called ‘negative charisma.’ This paper looks at that concept in the context of Max Weber’s view of charisma, in Buber’s view of Zion, and in his understanding of Judah Halevi’s Kuzari. His view of a common charisma as a means of uniting Israelis and Palestinians may hold important clues for resolving the problems in the Middle East today.
