Abstract:
Traces the antisemitism in Walser's latest novel back to his membership in the "Gruppe 47", a prestigious group of "non-political" writers who laughed during a reading by Paul Celan; and to his refusal to feel personally touched at the Auschwitz trial. The portrayal of the Jewish writer in the book, a caricature of Marcel Reich-Ranicki, embodies all the stereotypes of the Jew: a person with a repulsive exterior and unbounded sexual lust, with a drive to destroy German culture while lacking all culture of his own.
