Abstract:
Examines the coverage of the Dreyfus Affair by the Hebrew press in Europe (the St. Petersburg-based Zionist daily "Ha-melitz", the Warsaw-based "Ha-zefira", and the Krakow-based "Ha-magid le-Yisrael") and in Palestine (the ultra-Orthodox, anti-Zionist weekly "Havazelet", and the progressive nationalist-oriented weekly "Ha-zvi"). The perspective of the coverage was determined by the ideological orientation of the newspapers. The Zionist press proclaimed Dreyfus's innocence, considering him a victim of ineradicable French antisemitism. The non-Zionist press's tendency to believe in the influence of Jewish conduct on antisemitism (and its embarrassment at the conviction of a Jewish criminal) led to acceptance of Dreyfus's conviction, at least at the outset of the Affair.
