Abstract:
Focuses on psychological aspects of antisemitism and Nazism as described in the works of the Austrian Jewish writer Joseph Roth. Roth believed that the Nazis' hatred of Jews was a pretext for attacking Christianity and creating a new religion. Compares Roth's theories with Freud's view that antisemitism stemmed from the Christians' disguised hatred of their own patriarchal religion, and with Arnold Zweig's similar theory of Christian self-hatred. Argues that these theories trivialize antisemitism and minimize its importance.
