Abstract:
In the immediate aftermath of World War II, projects were initiated to collect testimonies from child survivors in several European countries (e.g. Poland, Germany, France, Hungary). The initiators used various methods: some, like Benjamin Tenenbaum and Helena Wrobel-Kagan, asked children to write autobiographies; others, like the Central Jewish Historical Commission in Poland and the Central Historical Commission in Munich, interviewed the children. From 1945, several collections of children's testimonies were published worldwide. Analyzes problems connected with such testimonies, e.g. whether they had a therapeutic effect on the children or the opposite; the motivation of the initiators of these projects; and the meaning of children's testimonies, which emphasize Nazi barbarism, the children's suffering as the strongest symbol of the Holocaust, and Jewish heroism.
