Abstract:
Shows that accusations against Jews expressed in modern-day antisemitism (mean and cruel barbarians, traitors, rebels, destroyers of society, conspirators, misanthropes, etc.) existed already in the ancient world. Discusses the views of Manetho (3rd century BCE), the Egyptian priest from Greece, who resented the great interest in Jews and Judaism in his time, as witnessed by the Greek translation of the Bible. Mentions also the Roman antisemites (e.g. Seneca, Tacitus), and the Egyptian philosopher from Greece, Apion (1st century BCE), all of whom presented arguments against the Jews and against the Jewish Hasmonean kingdom which are echoed today.
