Abstract:
Starts out by discussing the place of the Dreyfus Affair in modern history, emphasizing its enormous and far-reaching effects in French intellectual and political life. Nevertheless, its representation in French fiction after the First World War is virtually nonexistent. French writers were absorbed with the First World War (and later the Second), and many of them rejected realist, historically-oriented fiction. Analyzes the pre-WWI depiction of the Affair in different styles: allegory (Anatole France’s "L’Ile des Pingouins"), transposition (Romain Rolland’s "Les loups", Émile Zola’s "Vérité"), and mimetic representation, or documentary fiction (Roger Martin du Gard’s "Jean Barois", France’s "Monsieur Bergeret à Paris", and Proust’s postwar "À la recherche du temps perdu"), mentioning French society’s attitudes toward Jews and the prevalence of antisemitism.
