Abstract:
Examines the distinction between witnessing and bearing witness, the symbolism of second generation Holocaust literature, and the possible theological meaning of the issues raised in the context of the contemporary problematic of Jewish identity. Discusses the works of Elie Wiesel (a Holocaust survivor), and Art Spiegelman's "Maus" (about his father), survivor parents in Barbara Finkelstein's novel "Summer-Long-a-Coming", and stories by Lev Raphael whose parents were survivors.
