Abstract:
Discusses testimonies and affidavits given by Rudolf Kasztner in Germany to the investigating authorities of the Allies who were preparing the Nuremberg Trials, on behalf of Nazis (Kurt Becher, Dieter Wisliceny, Hans Jüttner, Alois H. Krumey) who had been involved in Kasztner's 1944 negotiations with Eichmann to save Hungarian Jews. Kasztner's testimonies were made public during his 1954 libel suit against Malkiel Gruenwald, who had accused him of collaborating with the Nazis. During the trial, Kasztner curiously denied giving the testimonies, leaving the public with the impression that he had done so on his own initiative. Introduces new evidence (mainly from Israeli archives) suggesting that Kasztner's testimonies on behalf of Nazis were approved by the Jewish Agency, which even financed his trips to Germany. Apparently, executives of the Jewish Agency thought that this might induce the accused Nazis to provide evidence which would enable the Jewish Agency to reclaim Jewish wealth confiscated by the Nazis and bring to trial more prominent figures, e.g. Eichmann.
