Abstract:
Examines the literary career of Schwarz-Bart (1928-2006), whose major work "Le Dernier des Justes", written in response to the Holocaust, earned him misgivings as well as great success. The novel, which traces the history of the Jews from the time of the Crusades to Auschwitz, received the Prix Goncourt in 1959 and was translated into 20 languages. Right-wing circles, however, succeeded in discrediting Schwarz-Bart by revealing historical errors and plagiarism in the novel, which was the first bestseller to deal with the Holocaust. Offended by the criticism, Schwarz-Bart abandoned Jewish themes and began writing about black memory and alienation instead, sometimes collaborating with his West Indian wife, Simone. When she became famous for her own work, doubts were raised as to whether Schwarz-Bart was in fact the author of the novels dealing with black history. He died in Guadeloupe, to where he had immigrated in the 1970s. His parents and two brothers were killed in the Holocaust.
