Abstract:
An analysis of the historical and present-day significance of the activities of Abbé Grégoire, praised by the Jews for his efforts on behalf of civic emancipation. Grégoire advocated "universal assimilation" of the Jews in order to make them good citizens. His enlightened concept of Jewish "regeneration" through education implied total abandonment of any kind of particularity. His strong criticism of Judaism and of Jewish "moral debasement" uses negative theological stereotypes, but with a "constructive" purpose. He also viewed equality of civil rights and education as steps toward conversion. Grégoire's views had a great influence on the official status of the Jews, the evolution of the French Jewish community, and the future reactions of French society regarding the Jews' accession to public positions.
