Abstract:
Examines memoirs by three survivors of the Theresienstadt ghetto: a translator of Czech literature into German, Anna Auředníčková (1873-1957); Rabbi Dr. Richard Feder (1875-1970); and Professor Emil Utitz (1883-1956). All three were bilingual and represented both Czech- and German-language prewar cultures. However, against the background of mass expulsions of ethnic Germans from Czecholslovakia after 1945, a shift to the political left, and perceptible postwar antisemitism, they chose to renounce or at least underplay their attachment to German-language culture in their memoirs and to stress their affiliation with Czech culture. All three did not attempt to argue for the primacy of Jewish suffering, presenting themselves as members of the larger Czech community of sufferers. In their memoirs, they described their intense love of the specifically Czech works performed in Theresienstadt and did not mention their participation in German-language cultural activities.
