Abstract:
The rise of antisemitism in late 19th-century France coincided with an upsurge of xenophobia in the country. There was, however, a difference between, for instance, anti-Italian sentiment and antisemitism. Although antisemitism had a prominent place in contemporary political discourse, no Jews were killed in the anti-Jewish riots (while dozens of Italians were killed in anti-alien riots). Several factors explain this phenomenon - for instance, many Jews were French citizens; most of them were concentrated in Paris; and, as a rule, they competed for employment with those social groups which were not prone to violence. The same pattern can be seen in France today: while many immigrants have fallen victim to xenophobic violence, the rare incidents involving Jews are always connected with international terrorism of fringe groups.
