Abstract:
Claims that both the critical interpretation which views Shylock as a symbol of a persecuted race and the opposite view, that he represents a negative image of the Jew and his religion, are unfounded. Using structural analysis, argues that the central figure of the play is Antonio, despite the dramatic force and function of Shylock.
