Abstract:
Analyzes psychological aspects in the memoirs of the two Holocaust survivors (now professors at Israeli universities) who reconstruct their traumatic childhood experiences when they lived in hiding in Catholic monasteries (one in France, the other in Slovakia). Also discusses the impact of the reconstruction of the past traumas on the revival of their memories, as well as on the presentation of contemporary Israeli experiences such as the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and the Gulf War in 1991. The two testimonies share common features in their narrative, structure, and form. Points to common conflicts reflected in the texts: between the wish to relate the personal trauma and the attempt to disguise it; and between the self who experienced in his childhood the horrors of the Holocaust and the public figure in his self-induced moral and social act of giving testimony. States that the repressed traumatic past shapes the reflection of the present and the present relives the traumatic past.
