Abstract:
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rabbi Judah ben Shmuel the Hasid(D. 1217), the central figure among the medieval pietist group known asHasidei Askenaz, had a particularly negative attitude toward longdistance travel, including pilgrimage to the Land of Israel. This articlesets forth his worldview on leaving the local area, as clearly expressed inhis writings and especially in Sefer Hasidim, of which Rabbi Judah wasthe principal author. The article calls to reconsider the accepted researchview, that Rabbi Judah the Hasid's anti-messianic worldview was thereason for his rejection of immigration to the Land of Israel. Thisrejection also, and perhaps primarily, stemmed from a sensitivity to themany mental and physical shortcomings associated with a long journeyto the Land of Israel, and to the crucial role that Rabbi Judah the Hasidassigned to the sage and the local Hasidic community in the atonementprocess of his Hasidim, and on the backdrop of the historic events of histime and place.
