Abstract:
Discusses Schönberg’s personal experience of antisemitism in the summer resort town of Mattsee (near Salzburg) in June 1921, when the town council decided to make the town "judenrein" from Jewish visitors; the Schönbergs remained in their rented villa, but the issue caused a stir in the press - both in Salzburg and Vienna - and amongst Schönberg’s friends (e.g. Alban Berg). Connects this event with his development of the twelve tone technique soon afterward, as well as to his later composition "A Survivor from Warsaw" (1947).
