Abstract:
States that the absence of documentary and autobiographical works in Kovner's literary oeuvre stems from Kovner's views on heroism and his attitude toward his role and his actions during the Holocaust. Kovner was tormented by some aspects of his acts and deeds (when he commanded resistance activities), and the impact of his actions on his followers. He believed that it is impossible to relate truthfully the experiences of the Jewish people during the Holocaust to those who did not live through it. He felt that recounting his own acts could harm the truthful relation of the events, as well as distort the reflection of his heroic role - according to his views - as a conscious participant in the events. He felt that these could be expressed more fully in literary writings.
