Abstract:
The Jewish press in Germany in 1938 consisted of 65 periodicals with a readership of ca. 300,000. Despite strict censorship, the press was able to give encouragement to its Jewish readers. Until the enactment of the Nuremberg Laws, the journals expressed loyalty to Germany and patriotism, but afterwards they were compelled to deal only with internal Jewish problems. Surveys the opinions of the most important periodicals on the question of emigration as a response to Nazism or Zionism, and claims that the press reflected the confusion on this issue among German Jews.
