Antisemitism History 1945-
Kurzfassung:
Surveys the manifestations of antisemitism that swept Switzerland in the late 1990s in reaction to Jewish demands for the restitution of unclaimed bank accounts and insurance policies of Holocaust victims and revelations of Swiss cooperation with the Nazis and the closing of the borders to Jewish refugees. The monetary demands were perceived as blackmail and revived latent stereotypes of Jewish cupidity and world conspiracy; the historical revelations seemed to impugn the Swiss people's heroic stand during the Second World War. The Swiss felt themselves attacked from all sides and developed a siege mentality, in which minorities are always seen as the enemy. Emphasizes that antisemitism was not confined to the radical right but appeared in carnival floats applauded by the public, in meetings, and in letters to the press.
