Abstract:
Quotes from Ephraim of Bonn's "Sefer Zekhirah, " which gives testimony on Bernard of Clairvaux's intervention to protect the Jews against a new wave of killing and persecutions at the beginning of the Second Crusade (1146). Fearing repetition of an anti-Jewish campaign similar to that of the First Crusade, Bernard denounced the monk Raoul's antisemitic sermons and forbade killing of Jews, invoking scriptural sources recommending that Jews be allowed to live as testimony of their error, and that they be punished through humiliation and spoliation. Ephraim of Bonn credits Bernard's posture to his great knowledge of the Christian religion, its theological sources, and provisions by different popes, such as Gregory the Great and Alexander II, who wished the Jews to live and to be converted through persuasion.
