Abstract:
Describes the discussion which followed the publication of a booklet by Guido Kisch (1969) in which Erasmus was accused of hatred of the Jews and Judaism, mainly on the basis of his letters. Concludes that Erasmus's theological anti-Judaism had nothing in common with the violent antisemitism of Luther, or with racial antisemitism, but was a form of religious antagonism based on the conviction that after the appearance of Jesus Christ Judaism had no more significance.
