Abstract:
Analyzes three episodes from Albert Cohen's works which recount confrontations between the author and an antisemitic character. Two of these meetings are imaginary, while the third is a recollection of a childhood experience. Cohen's reaction to antisemitism in his literary works is seen as "the tenderness of pity"; recognition of antisemitism seems to be his method of detecting humanism. Contends that Cohen's personal experiences with antisemitism influenced the orientation of all of his literary works, in which the Jew is viewed as the "Other" - rootless, and therefore, dangerous. Illustrates these views with two of Cohen's works: "Carnets" and "Ô vous frères humains", in which the personalities of a peddler as victim and Laval as tormentor are underscored.
