Abstract:
Examines the poetry of the Yiddish writer Chaim Grade (1910-1982), whose prewar works in the second half of the 1930s foreshadowed the Holocaust. His poem "Geveyn fun doyres" ("Cry of Generations"), written in 1936, was recited in Auschwitz by Jews who believed it was written expressly for them. Notes that Grade and his generation foreshadowed but did not foresee the Holocaust because of the "inability" to believe or understand how it was possible for man to do what he did to man. This "inability" is for Grade a quintessential expression of the Jewish spirit.
