Abstract: Mac Goldsmith (1902-1983) was born as Max Goldschmidt to a Jewish family in Sterbfritz, Hesse. A gifted engineer, he founded the Mecano firm in 1925, and in 1927 began to develop single-disc clutches for the German automobile industry. In 1934 he also founded another company, Metalgummi; however, under Nazi rule, his clients began to cancel contracts. During the second wave of Aryanization of Jewish businesses, Goldsmith was compelled to sell Mecano in January 1936, and his share of Metalgummi in February 1936. In January 1937 he and his wife Ruth managed to leave Germany for Great Britain. In 1936-38 the Nazis expropriated Goldsmith's property and funds left behind in Germany.
