Abstract: Ranges cultures along a continuum - from active, "separant" European cultures which manipulate nature to contemplative, passive and "participant" oriental cultures which seek transcendence. Judaism is closer to the latter, and therefore clashed with the separant Hellenistic and Christian cultures. The emancipation of the 19th century led to a new clash of cultures which resulted in a synthesis - socialism, accepted by many Jews but rejected by the Germans, who regressed into the separant paganism of Nazism. Jews adopted socialism because it promised socioeconomic equality and it reflected aspects of their Jewish core, such as universal justice and martyrdom, even Jews who consciously rejected their Judaism, like Karl Marx and Rosa Luxemburg. Analyzes the combination of German separant and Jewish participatory characteristics in socialism and communism.
