Abstract:
Introduces the idea of ethical reading, and proposes five stages of hermeneutical activities involved in ethical reading and interpretation. Applies such a reading to Wiesel's novel and examines its ethical aspects. Throughout the novel, the narrator is developing into an ethical witness in the face of historical forces that wish to obliterate his humanity. The motif of "Night" is moral death and the narrator's struggle against it, as he wishes to remain human and to abide within Western culture. Appraises Wiesel's moral position as higher than that of Mauriac, who proposed a Christian reading of "Night, " and higher than Anne Frank's moral stance.
