Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference "The Phenomenon of the Holocaust" (Prague - Terezín, 1999). Discusses why teaching the Holocaust is important for the education of young people. Analyzes the uniqueness of the Holocaust, showing how it differs from other genocides in the 20th century. The racist ideology of National-Socialism was a new concept amongst others put forward as "reasons" to kill people. The central position of antisemitism in the Nazi worldview, and the sentence of death on every Jew for the crime of having been born, was unique in history. The Holocaust should be taught for its universal importance as a symbol of evil, whose horrors should never be repeated.
