Abstract: Forty-six silver tetradrachms, 44 of them forming a hoard, were discovered in the unusual context of a mass grave, in the Roman-period cemetery in the colony of ‘Akko-Ptolemais. The coins range from Nero to Hadrian, with a terminus post quem for the hoard’s deposition in 119 CE. We argue that previous attempts to connect the hoard to the Bar Kokhba revolt are untenable, and suggest several possible scenarios for its deposition, none of them provable.

Abstract: Photographs of a group of pilaster capitals of a unique design have been identified in the archive (ATQ 64/6: Shivta) of Harris D. Colt (1901–1973), the first excavator of Shivta. The marble capitals, which are presented and discussed here for the first time, were found during excavations at the North Church at Shivta (1933–1935) and can be dated to the second half of the 5th and mid-6th century ce. The pilaster capitals which are presented here are an evidence for marble imported to the Negev and the prosperity of Shivta during the Byzantine period, emphasizing the investment in the interior architectural decoration of the North Church and its religious significance.

Abstract: Three churches are known in Shivṭa: the Northern, the Central and the Southern. All three were fully excavated by the Colt expedition in 1934–1938. Recently, a full documentation of the exposed walls was undertaken, recording the remains of paintings, engravings and inscriptions. When the Transfiguration scene on the southern apse of the Southern Church was re-examined in this project, three coin deposits were revealed. In this paper we will present the data and offer an interpretation thereof.
