Abstract:
Petrus Alfonsi's anti-Jewish polemical work introduced several innovations to the "adversus Iudaeos" literature in early 12th-century Spain. His work has been called the most important and popular of the anti-Jewish texts of the Latin Middle Ages. In a new philosophical vein, he accused Jews of lacking reason in their failure to adopt Christianity. The work was novel in its systematic references to the Talmud, which included ridicule of irrational Jewish error; his anti-talmudism was the initial push that led to the burning of the Talmud. In another innovation, he related to contemporary Jewish ritual (e.g. the priestly blessing) as referring to the Trinity.
