Abstract:
An amended and updated English version of the introduction to the 2004 German-language edition of Pulzer's "The Rise of Political Antisemitism in Germany and Austria" (first published in English in 1964 and in German as "Die Entstehung des politischen Antisemitismus in Deutschland und Österreich 1867-1914" in 1966; revised in English in 1988 and in German in 2004). Surveys historical works on German and Austrian antisemitism of the 19th-early 20th centuries, published mainly since 1960. Dismisses early monocausal interpretations of this phenomenon, which explain it in psychopathological (e.g. Freudian) or Marxist terms, and focuses on more complicated interpretations. Discusses issues which arise in historical explanations of antisemitism, e.g. the social strata of its proponents in Germany and Austria; attitudes of German Catholicism and socialism toward the Jews; the role of nationalism; continuity in German and Austrian antisemitism, and the "caesura" between conventional antisemitism in Germany and the genocidal form. Due to these works, we can achieve a better understanding of the temporal, geographical, and ideological fluctuations of antisemitic sentiment and of its general place in the political development of Germany and Austria.
