Abstract:
A lecture delivered at a study day held at Tel-Aviv University on 22 November 2003. Contends that, despite the differences between the various Zionist youth movements, they all provided their members with spiritual resources which allowed them to take part in resistance activities in the ghettos. The youth movement members and leaders, who were up against a pathological Nazi ideology and the choice of dying passively or while resisting, were able to choose the latter. This was the result of their Zionist education, with its emphasis on "historical activism" and its negation of the diaspora mentality.
