Abstract:
Despite the fact that the early Enlightenment thinkers Baruch Spinoza, John Locke, and Pierre Bayle (a Huguenot refugee scholar) argued for religious tolerance, allowing all people freedom of worship, they rejected Judaism, which to them epitomized intolerance as well as moral and religious values opposed to their own. Thus, paradoxically, their arguments for tolerance tended to exclude the Jews. The famous libertarian Locke apparently ended up basing his tolerance of Jews on the hope that they could be converted.
