Abstract:
Totten relates his experience of teaching a short poem by Dan Pagis, "Written in Pencil in the Sealed Railway-Car, " to high school students in a summer course at the University of Arkansas, using reader-response theory. In the course of the lesson, the students were asked to write a letter to Pagis in which they had to express their opinion on the poem. The method provokes strong and unique insights about key issues germane to the Holocaust.
