Abstract:
Explores the connection between pilgrimages to the site of the Schoene Maria Chapel (erected in Regensburg in 1519 on the site of the synagogue which was destroyed when the Jews were expelled) and anti-Jewish violence. Contemporary Catholic writings that praised the pilgrimage, and Protestant ones that condemned it, both demonized the Jews; this suggests a link in the popular imagination between anti-Jewish violence and devotion to Mary. While economic rivalry played a role, desecration of the synagogue and Jewish cemetery revealed Christian concern about "pollution" by the Jews, their spiritual enemies. The Jews were specifically targeted as denigrators of Mary; their rejecting her was seen as fulfilling the words of the prophets according to Christian biblical interpretation.
