Abstract:
Raul Hilberg's decision not to alter his much-criticized remarks on the passivity or compliance of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust in the new edition of "The Destruction of the European Jews" (1985) - see Vol. 2, no. 589 - has aroused considerable surprise. Argues that Hilberg's single-minded concentration on the Nazi criminals has enabled him to reach a unique understanding of the methods they used to make resistance physically and psychologically impossible. Nevertheless, refusing to be diverted by the desire to glorify the martyrs, he shows that the Jewish tradition of non-resistance and martyrdom made it easier for the Nazis to achieve their aims. His refusal to change the subject is essential in a period when trivialization and relativization of the Holocaust is spreading.
