Abstract: Argues that Spielberg's film "Schindler's List" reflects a new phase in the collective memory about World War II and the Holocaust in a media-dominated world; the film is part of a process that has incorporated the memory of genocide into the political process. Contends, though, that it was an economic rather than a moral rationale that prompted Schindler to invest his money in the survival of his Jewish employees. At the end of the war, all the money he had earned had lost its value. The Jewish employees became Schindler's insurance that he would have a life when the war was over. Contends that this deconstruction of the premises of the film limits its significance to those who are interested in Spielberg's development as a Hollywood director.
