Abstract:
Analyzes five opinion polls on antisemitism in Germany carried out in 1991, 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2002 by four organizations. Although the questions presented to interviewees differed among the organizations, one can detect a decrease in antisemitism through 1998. In 2002 there was a slight increase in antisemitic sets of answers and a decrease in completely unprejudiced ones, but a large increase in evenly-balanced sets of answers. Attributes this to the antisemitism debate of that year. This showed less influence in former East Germany, where antisemitism was generally lower than in the West. also analyzes (slight) differences related to gender, age, education, and employment. Advocates a longitudinal study of antisemitism based on uniform questionnaires.
