Abstract: Discusses discrimination against Jews in regard to admission to American medical schools, including unofficial quotas and indirect means for refusal of applications (e.g. questions about religion and interviews), as well as in regard to internships and residencies. The arguments against Jewish admission were inconsistent. Some university officials were clearly antisemitic, and their prejudices affected admission policy. Jews were divided in their reaction to the situation; some urged Jews to accommodate to the situation, while others, like Stephen S. Wise, undertook public action. Two other ways that Jews undertook to pursue medical careers were to study in Europe (Scotland was especially welcoming) and at newly-established Jewish medical schools. Anti-Jewish discrimination declined in the USA after World War II.
