Abstract:
Part I, covering the period from the founding of the German "Abwehrverein" (a joint Jewish-gentile effort to fight antisemitism) in 1890 in Berlin to the First World War, appeared in 1983. Part II discusses the organization’s leaders (especially Georg Gothein, chairman from 1909 to 1933), and its problems of finance and membership, based on analysis of the Abwehrverein’s bulletin. Examines attitudes of Jews, Christians, and religious and political groups to the organization, whose work had a predominantly defensive character involving much apologetics. The Abwehrverein was liquidated in July 1933 after carrying on a futile battle against antisemitism for more than four decades.
