Abstract:
Discusses American children's literature on the Holocaust - picture books, fiction, biographies, but not textbooks or history books - intended for Jewish children in the first to fourth grades. Believes that such literature has sense, since the Holocaust is a substantial part of the Jewish collective memory, and can be suitable for readers of these ages if the writers have strategies of representing the Holocaust without doing damage to impressionable young psyches. Reviews a sample of children's books dealing with the Holocaust published from 1952 to the present. Many of these books address the Holocaust only indirectly and some of them overdo this; the child will need some additional information upon reading them. Only since the late 1970s have children's books addressed the Holocaust more explicitly, showing it as a Jewish event and dealing with the complexities of this tragedy. Contends that the main significance of the children's Holocaust books is to preserve the memory of the Shoah.
