Abstract:
Discusses missionizing activities, taking as example the case of the Dominican preacher Vincent Ferrer who preached to the Jews in Perpignan at the beginning of the 15th century. Analyzes an eyewitness report by William Portas, a student, who relates that the Jews were compelled to listen to a sermon by Ferrer along with a crowd of urban citizens. At one point, Ferrer interpreted an Old Testament passage which provoked a hostile response from Jews who accused him of falsehood and presented an opposite interpretation. The hostility of the crowd increased. Ferrer proposed to discuss the dubious passage in private. In the end, a royal pardon for verbal abuse was granted to the Jews involved; two Jews were fined. Concludes that this case casts doubt on the assumption of the destruction of the Jewish community and the intellectual weakness of the Jews after 1391 and during the ongoing persecution.
